48' Thrall 2-Hood Coil Car

Prototype Information

Thrall Car Manufacturing introduced the 48-foot two-hood coil steel car in the 1970s to serve the growing demand for coiled steel transport. Designed with a depressed center well and removable hoods, the car protected steel coils from weather while keeping the load secure during transit. The two-hood design allowed easy access for loading and unloading, while cradles or troughs in the well prevented the coils from shifting.

Steel producers and railroads widely adopted the Thrall 48′ coil car for mill-to-customer service. The durable design and efficient handling kept these cars in heavy use for decades, and many remain in service today, often operating in dedicated steel service pools across North America.
