60' Berwick 7580 Appliance Box Car
Prototype Information
The Berwick 7580 is a 60-foot high-cube boxcar. It was built in 1976–1977 by Berwick Forge and Fabricating. The company worked out of an old ACF plant in Pennsylvania.
These boxcars were made to carry large appliances. Each held up to 7,580 cubic feet. They had a 70-ton capacity and wavy, corrugated ends.
Railroads like L&N, Rock Island, and Missouri Pacific first used them. Later, CSX, Seaboard System, and Union Pacific took over many of them. Some cars even kept their original paint.
Berwick built a lot of boxcars in the 1970s. Then the economy slumped. Production ended in 1982.
Many 7580s stayed in service for years. They were tough and reliable.
