60' PC&F 7633 Appliance Box Car

Prototype Information

Pacific Car & Foundry (PC&F) built the 7633-cubic foot boxcar in the early to mid-1970s to handle large, lightweight appliances like refrigerators, washers, and dryers. With its 60-foot high-cube body, double sliding doors, and smooth interior, the car protected sensitive freight and allowed manufacturers to load products efficiently.

Railroads and leasing companies assigned these cars to dedicated appliance service, often running them in controlled pools between factories and distribution centers. Many carried “Appliance Service Only” stencils. While some later saw other uses or retirement, others still operate today, hauling similar bulky freight across North America.
