52' 6" 70 Ton Mill Gondola

Prototype Information

Construction began on the 70 Ton Mill Gondola in 1940. Numerous builders and railroad shops produced nearly 16,000 of these cars. The simple open-top design made them extremely versatile. They hauled various loads including steel products, machinery, minerals, and scrap metal.

Production of this specific design continued until late 1957. These cars remained common sights on rail lines well into the late 1970s. Their rugged construction allowed for a long service life across the North American rail network. Many railroads relied on these gondolas for both raw materials and finished industrial goods.
