ARI 33,000 Gallon Spiral Tank Car

Prototype Information

American Railcar Industries (ARI) introduced the 33,000-gallon pressurized tank car in the late 2000s. The company engineered this car to transport liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), propane, butane, and anhydrous ammonia across North American rail networks. Built to DOT-112 safety standards, the design featured a heavy steel pressure vessel, ceramic insulation, and full-head end shields to protect high-hazard cargo. Workers created its signature visual look by wrapping steel jacket sheets helically around the insulated body. This process left distinct diagonal spiral seams along the exterior.

Major railcar leasing fleets—including NATX, CBTX, UTLX, and AITX—quickly bought large numbers of these cars for energy and chemical transport. The design fit comfortably within standard Plate C clearances, making it ideal for mainline freight routes between refineries and distribution terminals. Greenbrier acquired ARI’s manufacturing business in 2019, but these spiral-wrapped cars still handle daily pressure service across the US, Canada, and Mexico.
