Evans 4780 Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

Evans Products Company built the 4780 covered hopper during the 1970s and early 1980s. These cars transported bulk commodities like grain, fertilizer, and plastic pellets. Each railcar featured a 4,780-cubic-foot capacity and durable welded steel construction. Multiple discharge bays allowed for efficient unloading at customer facilities.

Railroads and leasing companies like North American Car Company and GATX operated these hoppers extensively. The Evans design influenced many later covered hopper models. Evans eventually left the railcar manufacturing business, but many 4780 hoppers remain in service. Rebuild and modification programs keep these versatile cars on the rails for modern industrial use.
