60' Flat Car

Prototype Information

Railroad flatcars have played an important role in the transportation of goods across the United States since the 19th century. Early flatcars consisted of simple platforms on wheels for hauling lumber and coal. As rail networks expanded, these cars became more specialized to handle a wider variety of industrial freight.

Trailer Train acquired a fleet of 5,000 modern 60-foot flatcars between 1964 and 1975. Most major US railroads also rostered similar 60-foot equipment. Manufacturers like ACF, Thrall, and Pullman Standard built these cars for diverse service. They carried auto frames, logs, military vehicles, and farm equipment. Some units even received modifications to transport intermodal containers.
