3215 Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

The PS-2 3215 covered hopper was part of a series of freight cars built by the Pullman-Standard Company in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The “PS-2” refers to Pullman-Standard’s second-generation covered hopper design, and “3215” indicates the car’s 3,215 cubic foot capacity. These cars were used primarily for hauling dry bulk commodities like grain, cement, sand, and plastic pellets.

Pullman-Standard introduced the PS-2 series to meet growing demand for efficient bulk transport. The 3215 cubic foot model was a transitional design—larger than earlier 2-bay hoppers but smaller than later 3-bay cars like the 4750. It typically featured three center discharge bays and circular roof hatches for top loading.

The PS-2 3215s were popular with many railroads and private shippers. They were known for their durability and versatility, and many remained in service well into the 1980s and beyond. Today, they are a common subject for model railroads and are recognized as a classic American freight car design.
