NACC 20,500 Gallon Non-Insulated Tank Car
Prototype Information
North American Car Corporation (NACC) introduced the 20,500-gallon non-insulated tank car in the early 1960s. This design targeted the growing market for transporting chemical products that did not require temperature control or heating. The car stood out due to its “whale-belly” or “double-plug” profile, where the tank diameter increased in the center to maximize capacity while keeping a shorter overall length. This compact, high-capacity design allowed railroads to move more product in shorter trains, fitting easily into older sidings and industrial facilities.
During the 1960s and 1970s, these cars became ubiquitous in the transport of vegetable oils, corn syrup, and various petroleum-based chemicals. NACC leased these cars to a wide range of industrial shippers, making their logo a common sight across North American rail networks. As safety regulations changed and newer designs favored larger 30,000-gallon capacities, the 20,500-gallon cars gradually transitioned to secondary services. Many survived for decades in specialized chemical pools or as storage tanks. They remain a classic example of the mid-century shift toward purpose-built, high-cube liquid transport.
