PRR X58 Box Car

Prototype Information

The X58 boxcar was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad in the early 1960s. It was designed for general freight use and offered more capacity than earlier boxcars. The car was about 50 feet long and could hold nearly 5,000 cubic feet of cargo. It had a welded steel body and modern roller bearing trucks.

The X58 came in several versions, like the X58A and X58C. These had different door sizes, roofs, and insulation. Some were used for temperature-sensitive goods.

After PRR merged into Penn Central and later Conrail, many X58s stayed in use. Some lasted into the 1990s. They were strong, reliable cars during a time of change in rail freight.
