Roanoke Shops 4750 Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

The Roanoke Shops 4750 covered hopper was built by Norfolk & Western at its Roanoke Shops. Introduced in the mid-20th century, these cars carried dry bulk commodities like grain, cement, and fertilizer. They featured steel construction, gravity-discharge hoppers, and covered roofs to protect cargo.

The 4750s operated widely across the N&W network. Many continued service through mergers into the Norfolk Southern era. Some were later converted to maintenance-of-way or other secondary roles.
