4427 Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

Pullman-Standard (PS) introduced the 4427 cubic foot “Low-Side” covered hopper in the early 1960s. It was one of the first successful designs to utilize the “trough hatch,” a long continuous opening on the roof that allowed for faster, uninterrupted loading of grain. The “low-side” designation refers to its height of approximately 14′ 3″, which allowed it to clear older, lower grain elevators that taller cars could not reach. Despite its shorter profile, the car utilized a three-bay configuration and a rugged interior bracing system to maximize its carrying capacity for heavy agricultural products.

The PS 4427 became a staple of the “Grain Era” as railroads transitioned away from using 40-foot boxcars for bulk transport. Thousands of these cars wore the colorful liveries of major grain-hauling roads like the Santa Fe, Milwaukee Road, and Rock Island. Its design was so successful that it served as the direct predecessor to the ubiquitous PS-2CD 4750 cubic foot hopper. While larger cars eventually took over the primary long-haul grain routes, many 4427s remained in service for decades. They found second lives hauling fertilizer, minerals, and other dense materials well into the early 2000s.
