5150 NSC Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

National Steel Car introduced the 5,150 cubic-foot covered hopper in the mid-1990s to serve the growing agricultural market. The builder designed this 60-foot, three-bay car specifically for dry bulk goods, including grain, fertilizer, and ingredients for food manufacturers. Featuring curved sides, raised panel weld seams, and full-length trough roof hatches, the 5150 provided a modern, high-capacity design that allowed shippers to load and discharge bulk cargo quickly.

Thousands of these hoppers rolled off the assembly line in Hamilton, Ontario, entering service for Class I railroads and major private fleets across North America. Railroads like Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, and Union Pacific acquired large blocks, alongside agricultural giants such as Archer Daniels Midland. Thanks to their durable steel construction and efficient design, NSC 5150 covered hoppers remain a common sight on unit grain and bulk freight trains today.
