53' Thrall 14-Post Gondola

Prototype Information

Thrall Car Manufacturing Company introduced its 53′ 14-post gondola in the late 1960s and 1970s to handle heavy, abusive industrial freight. Built with a 70-ton or 100-ton capacity, this car featured a distinct fishbelly profile and a welded or riveted body. The defining visual trait was the 14 heavy external vertical ribs (or posts) on each side, which provided crucial structural support against the immense outward pressure of shifting loads. These rugged cars became a major industry favorite for moving raw or unfinished materials that did not require weather protection, including structural steel, scrap metal, stone aggregates, and pulpwood.

Because the design was so versatile and durable, dozens of North American railroads ordered huge blocks of the 14-post configuration. Major original owners and operators included the Milwaukee Road, Conrail, Missouri Pacific, Southern Pacific, and the Soo Line, alongside various regional shortlines and modern maintenance-of-way fleets like Herzog. Thrall and subsequent builders produced variations of this 53′ mill gondola for decades, keeping thousands of them in active, hard-working mainline revenue service from the late 20th century straight into the present day.
