68' Railgon Gondola
Prototype Information
The origin of Railgon dates back to June 1979, when the Trailer Train Company (now TTX) established the Railgon Company (reporting marks GONX and GNTX) to solve a severe, industry-wide shortage of reliable gondolas. Based on the successful free-running fleet model of Railbox, Railgon allowed participating railroads to pool standardized freight cars, reducing empty car miles and expensive car-hire charges. While the initial fleet comprised roughly 4,000 standardized 52-foot, 100-ton gondolas built in 1980–1981 by major car builders like Thrall, Greenville, and Pullman-Standard, economic shifts and industrial restructuring eventually led to fleet consolidation and transferred leases throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
As steel production and heavy manufacturing evolved, the demand grew for longer, higher-capacity cars capable of hauling structural steel, pipe, rebar, and heavy scrap. To modernize the aging fleet of standard 52-foot cars, TTX and major North American railroads introduced the 68-foot plate-C gondola into service around 2010. Featuring 17-rib reinforced sidewalls, straight sills, and integrated top-chord tie-down points, these 68-foot cars became a versatile staple across Class I networks, operating under both GNTX pooling marks and individual railroad liveries.
