SD70 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
The EMD SD70, built from 1992 to 1999, launched the SD70 series. It used the traditional narrow Spartan Cab, carrying forward the look and layout of earlier EMD road units. With 4,000 horsepower and DC traction motors, the SD70 delivered solid pulling power while introducing the new HTCR radial steering truck, which cut down wheel and track wear.
Norfolk Southern and Conrail bought most of the fleet, sticking with the proven Spartan Cab even as wide-nose designs gained ground elsewhere. After the late 1990s, EMD shifted its attention to the wide-cab SD70M and other comfort-cab variants, bringing the original SD70’s production run to a close.
