Prototype Information

The Alco C424 was a pivotal model in the Century Series lineup, introduced by the American Locomotive Company (Alco) in 1963 to compete with EMD’s GP30 and GE’s U25B. Powered by a 16-cylinder 251B diesel engine, the C424 delivered 2,400 horsepower and featured a streamlined, rugged design that emphasized simplified maintenance compared to earlier Alco models. While it was a versatile four-axle road switcher capable of both heavy freight and high-speed service, it entered a fiercely competitive market where Alco was struggling to maintain its foothold against the growing dominance of its rivals.

Production of the C424 ran until 1967, with 190 units built for railroads across North America. The model found significant success with the Pennsylvania Railroad and several Canadian lines, such as the Canadian Pacific and the Erie Lackawanna. Despite Alco’s eventual exit from the locomotive business in 1969, the C424 earned a reputation for longevity and lugging power. Many units enjoyed remarkably long second and third lives on shortline railroads, where their heavy frames and reliable 251-series engines made them favorites for enthusiasts and operators alike well into the late 20th century.
