RSD-4/5 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
ALCO introduced the RSD-4 in 1951 and followed with the RSD-5 in 1952 as six-axle road-switchers designed for heavy freight service on light or challenging track. Both models used ALCO’s 1,600-horsepower 244 diesel engine and featured a C-C wheel arrangement, giving them superior tractive effort compared with four-axle units, making them ideal for steep grades and heavy hauls.
Railroads across North America—particularly those with mountainous or heavy-freight routes—embraced the RSD-4 and RSD-5 for their power, reliability, and versatility. The RSD-5 offered minor improvements over the RSD-4, including updated electrical systems and enhanced performance.
Together, the RSD-4 and RSD-5 helped ALCO maintain a strong presence in the diesel transition era, providing railroads with robust, six-axle alternatives to EMD’s comparable locomotives.
