S-2 Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

ALCO introduced the S-2 in 1940 as a 1,000-horsepower switcher locomotive, building on the success of its earlier S-series switchers. Powered by a 6-cylinder 539T diesel engine and featuring a B-B wheel arrangement, the S-2 offered reliable low-speed tractive effort for yard and industrial switching.

Railroads across North America, including the New York Central, Pennsylvania Railroad, and Southern Pacific, adopted the S-2 for its durability, ease of maintenance, and versatility in both rail yards and short-line service. Its rugged design and straightforward operation made it a favorite among crews and maintenance teams alike.

The S-2 remained in production until 1950, helping cement ALCO’s reputation as a leading builder of diesel switchers during the transition from steam to diesel power.
