VO-1000 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
Baldwin Locomotive Works introduced the VO-1000 switcher in 1939. The model quickly became Baldwin’s most successful early diesel locomotive. An eight-cylinder, normally aspirated VO prime mover powered the unit. This four-stroke engine produced 1,000 horsepower. The VO-1000 featured a heavy cast-steel frame. This rugged construction provided exceptional wheel grip and high starting tractive effort. Railroads heavily favored the VO-1000 for lugging heavy freight cars at very low speeds.
Baldwin built 548 VO-1000 units between 1939 and 1946. Dozens of North American railroads purchased the model. The U.S. military also bought several units during World War II. A deep, rhythmic exhaust sound made the VO-1000 easily recognizable in busy rail yards. Baldwin replaced the model with the DS-4-4-1000 in 1946. Many VO-1000s enjoyed very long service lives. Railroads later repowered several of these units with EMD engines to extend their careers for decades.
