SD7 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
The EMD SD7 rolled out in February 1952 as the first of Electro-Motive Division’s six-axle “Special Duty” locomotives. Railroads needed engines with more pulling power and better weight distribution than four-axle models, and the SD7 delivered. Its C-C Flexicoil trucks spread the weight over six axles, giving it stronger traction on steep grades, sharp curves, and lighter track.
At its core, the SD7 packed a 16-cylinder 567B diesel engine producing 1,500 horsepower. It outmuscled the popular GP7 by trading speed for brute pulling strength, making it ideal for heavy freight duty.
EMD built 188 units between 1952 and 1953, supplying roads like Southern Pacific, Great Northern, Burlington, and Pennsylvania. Many later got upgraded engines and electrical gear, with rebuilt versions known as SD7Rs.
