B40-8W Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

The EMD B40-8W is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) from 1987 to 1992. It belongs to the Dash 8 series and produces 4,000 horsepower using a 16-cylinder 710G engine. The “B” indicates its B-B wheel arrangement with four axles, and the “W” stands for the wide-nose safety cab, which offers better crew protection and comfort.

The B40-8W was designed for high-speed road freight service on railroads that preferred four-axle locomotives for lighter track impact and better acceleration. It featured improved electronics and fuel efficiency compared to earlier models.

Major railroads like Union Pacific and CSX used the B40-8W extensively. Many of these locomotives have been rebuilt or upgraded, and some remain in service today. The B40-8W is known for its combination of power, reliability, and modern crew safety features.
