E9 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
The EMD E9 debuted in 1954 as the final E-unit passenger locomotive. It had two 12-cylinder 567C engines producing 2,400 horsepower. The locomotive offered smooth and reliable performance for high-speed trains. Railroads like Union Pacific, Rock Island, Burlington, and Milwaukee Road operated E9s. Production was limited as passenger traffic was declining. Many served long second lives with Amtrak and in Union Pacific’s executive trains. The E9 closed out the classic streamlined E-unit era.
