Prototype Information
EMD launched the SD40-2 in 1972, building on the success of the earlier SD40 with major upgrades in reliability and performance. Powered by a 3,000-horsepower 16-cylinder 645E3 engine, the SD40-2 delivered strong pulling power and smooth operation thanks to its longer frame and HT-C trucks. Railroads across North America quickly adopted it for heavy freight and mainline service, appreciating its easy maintenance and rugged design. Between 1972 and 1989, EMD built more than 3,900 units, making it one of the most popular diesel locomotives ever produced. Even today, many SD40-2s remain on the rails, a testament to their durability and timeless engineering.
