SW7 Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

EMD rolled out the SW7 in 1949 as a stronger successor to its early switcher line. The locomotive used a 12-cylinder 567A engine rated at 1,200 horsepower, giving railroads a dependable tool for yard and industrial service. EMD built more than 480 units through 1951, along with TR4 cow-calf sets for heavy switching. Railroads across North America put the SW7 to work, and many units later found long second careers with short lines and industries. With its simple design, tough build, and reliable engine, the SW7 reinforced EMD’s dominance in the postwar switcher market.
