SD70ACe Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

EMD introduced the SD70ACe in 2004 to give railroads a powerful, emissions-compliant road locomotive for heavy freight service. The locomotive packs 4,300 horsepower from a 16-cylinder 710G3C-T2 engine and drives AC traction motors that put more power to the rails with better adhesion than earlier DC models. Major carriers like Union Pacific, BNSF, Norfolk Southern, and Kansas City Southern quickly built large fleets, while international buyers added to its reach. EMD kept pushing the design forward with specialized versions, including the Tier 4-compliant SD70ACe-T4 and export heavy-haul models. With its combination of raw power, efficiency, and adaptability, the SD70ACe became one of EMD’s most important locomotives of the 21st century.
