3000 2 Bay Covered Hopper
Prototype Information
The Pullman-Standard 3000 cubic foot 2-bay covered hopper hit the rails in the 1960s, built for hauling heavy bulk commodities like cement, sand, and industrial chemicals. Pullman-Standard designed this car with purpose: carry dense loads that didn’t need much space but demanded strength and efficiency. With its two-bay setup and gravity-discharge gates, the car loaded from the top and dumped its cargo easily from the bottom, making it a workhorse in industries that relied on quick, reliable unloading.
Its compact length—about 35 to 40 feet—made it easy to spot on tight industrial tracks, and the welded steel body took years of wear without complaint. Railroads across North America ran these cars hard, and many stayed in service long after Pullman-Standard shut down its freight car operations in 1981. Some were rebuilt, others repainted and repurposed, but their original design stayed intact—simple, rugged, and effective.
