PS 5344 Box Car
Prototype Information
The Pullman-Standard 5344 boxcar hit the rails in the early 1970s as a durable, all-purpose freight car built for versatility. Pullman-Standard, a dominant force in railcar manufacturing, designed this 50-foot boxcar to meet the growing needs of railroads hauling everything from consumer goods to industrial products. The “5344” in its name refers to its 5,344-cubic-foot interior capacity, making it slightly smaller in volume than high-cube cars but still capable of handling large, palletized loads.
With a 10-foot-6-inch interior height, the 5344 offered plenty of vertical space without venturing into high-cube territory. Pullman-Standard gave it a welded steel body, sliding plug or Youngstown doors, and cushioned underframes to reduce shock and protect freight. Many came equipped with DF (Damage-Free) loading gear, allowing shippers to secure cargo without risking damage during transit.
Railroads across North America adopted the 5344 in large numbers. Penn Central, Burlington Northern, Southern Pacific, and others ran these cars heavily through the 1970s and 1980s. Their solid construction and balanced design turned them into workhorses for general service, and they became a fixture in mixed freight consists for decades.
