4650 ACF Covered Hopper
Prototype Information
The ACF 4650 covered hopper, introduced by American Car and Foundry (ACF) in the mid-1960s, became a cornerstone of bulk commodity transportation. With a capacity of 4,650 cubic feet, its three-bay design and welded steel construction made it durable and versatile. The covered roof and gravity discharge gates suited it for agricultural products like grain, industrial minerals like cement and sand, and some chemicals.
Widely adopted by U.S. railroads and leasing companies, the ACF 4650’s practical design ensured its place as a standard for mid-density freight. Its legacy influenced subsequent hopper models, and many remain in service or preserved today, showcasing its lasting impact on rail transport.
