50' Gunderson High Cube Box Car
Prototype Information
Gunderson, Inc. (later Gunderson–Greenbrier) built the 50-foot high-cube boxcar in the 1960s to carry larger, lighter freight more efficiently. Taller than a standard 50′ boxcar—usually Plate F clearance—it maximized cubic capacity while still fitting most North American clearances.
Railroads loaded these rib-sided cars with auto parts, paper, appliances, and other bulky goods that filled volume before weight limits. Gunderson equipped them with wide plug doors and cushioned underframes to protect cargo during transit.
