5161 Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

The Trinity 5161 covered hopper rolled out in the 1990s, giving grain and bulk commodity shippers a more efficient, high-capacity alternative to older cars. With 5,161 cubic feet of capacity and a three-bay design, it quickly became a go-to for hauling grain, dried distillers grains (DDGs), and fertilizer.

Trinity built the 5161 to outperform the 4750, providing greater capacity and improved efficiency. Its all-welded steel body replaced older riveted designs, cutting maintenance and increasing durability. The three-bay configuration sped up loading and unloading, keeping cars on the move.

Railroads and leasing companies ordered them in large numbers, making the 5161 a staple on grain and bulk routes. Even as newer models like the Trinity 5200 and 5241 enter service, the 5161 continues to serve as a reliable workhorse on North American railroads.
