40' Reefer Container

Prototype Information

Railroads and ocean carriers introduced the 40-foot refrigerated container in the 1960s to handle growing intermodal and perishable freight. Built with mechanical refrigeration or insulated designs using ice or brine, these containers carried fruits, vegetables, dairy, and frozen goods over long distances without spoilage. The 40-foot reefer quickly replaced older wooden boxcars and reefers, becoming a standard in intermodal logistics and a common sight on container trains and at ports worldwide.
