SD70MAC Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

The EMD SD70MAC debuted in 1993 as EMD’s first high-horsepower AC-traction SD70 locomotive. It produced 4,000 horsepower from the reliable 16-710G3B engine and used AC traction motors for better adhesion and heavy freight performance. Early SD70MACs featured the wide-nose “North American” safety cab for crew comfort and protection.

Railroads like Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern quickly adopted the SD70MAC for heavy freight service, including coal, intermodal, and general merchandise trains. Its combination of AC traction, power, and reliability helped establish the SD70 series as EMD’s flagship platform, paving the way for later models like the SD70ACe.
