C44-9W Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
GE introduced the C44-9W in 1993 as part of its Dash 9 series, targeting heavy freight service across North America. The “W” stood for the wide-nose “North American” safety cab, giving crews enhanced protection and comfort. Powered by a 4,400-horsepower 16-cylinder 7FDL-16 engine, the C44-9W combined raw power with advanced microprocessor controls for improved traction, fuel efficiency, and diagnostics.
Major railroads—including Union Pacific, BNSF, CSX, and Norfolk Southern—quickly adopted the C44-9W for hauling long, demanding freight trains. Its angular wide-nose cab, modular body panels, and reliable performance made it a standout on mainline operations.
The C44-9W became one of GE’s most successful high-horsepower freight locomotives, bridging the gap between the Dash 9 series and the next-generation Evolution Series.
