Prototype Information
The GE ES44 series, part of the Evolution Series, debuted in 2003 and quickly became a freight powerhouse. Built to meet EPA Tier 2 emissions standards by 2005, it replaced the Dash 9 series with its GEVO-12 engine, delivering 4,400 horsepower while cutting emissions by 40%.

ES44AC: AC traction motors for better traction on steep grades.
ES44DC: DC traction motors, offering a cost-effective alternative.
ES44C4: Introduced in 2010, with only four powered axles for improved fuel efficiency.
ES44ACi: Modified for international markets.
Production and Impact
Major Class I railroads like BNSF, UP, CSX, and NS adopted the ES44 in large numbers, with over 7,500 units produced. Its advanced features, including Trip Optimizer and distributed power capabilities, improved fuel efficiency and train handling.
Even after GE’s locomotive division became Wabtec in 2019, the ES44’s legacy continues, shaping modern freight operations.
