Procor 5820 Plastics Hopper

Prototype Information

Procor manufactured the 5820-cubic-foot covered hopper at its Oakville, Ontario, plant starting in the late 1970s. The company tested a prototype in 1976 and began full production in 1978. Production continued in several batches through the early 1990s. Procor built approximately 1,700 units for its UNPX lease fleet and for Dow Chemical. The car features a ribbed-side profile similar to Pullman-Standard designs. However, it was an independent engineering project featuring Procor’s proprietary Toggle Lock pneumatic outlet gates.

Procor engineered this car specifically to transport low-density plastic pellets and resins. Small round roof hatches prevent cargo contamination. The four-bay hopper bottoms allow for efficient pneumatic unloading across North America. Many of these cars served the Canadian Chemical Valley in Sarnia, Ontario. Major industrial customers like Union Carbide and BF Goodrich used these fleets extensively. In later years, many units moved into second-hand service for agricultural providers like Essex Hybrid.
