C40-8M Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

GE introduced the C40-8M in 1988 as a specialized version of its Dash 8 series, designed to meet the growing demand for safer and more efficient freight locomotives. The “M” stood for a full-width, North American-style safety cab, giving crews enhanced protection and comfort over the standard cab. Powered by a 3,800-horsepower 7FDL-16 engine and equipped with advanced microprocessor controls, the C40-8M delivered improved traction, fuel efficiency, and diagnostics.

Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, and other major railroads adopted the C40-8M for heavy mainline service, valuing its combination of power, reliability, and crew-friendly design. Its angular wide-nose cab and modular body panels made it visually distinctive and operationally practical.

The C40-8M played a key role in GE’s Dash 8 lineup, bridging the gap between earlier locomotives and the more advanced Dash 9 and Evolution Series models.
