SD40-2 Diesel Locmotive

Prototype Information

EMD introduced the SD40-2 in 1972 as part of its Dash 2 line, improving on the earlier SD40 with enhanced electronics, better reliability, and easier maintenance. Powered by the EMD 645E3 16-cylinder engine, the SD40-2 delivered 3,000 horsepower and rode on HTC (high traction) trucks, which gave it a smooth ride and strong adhesion.

North American railroads quickly embraced the SD40-2 for its durability and versatility. EMD built over 3,900 units through 1986, making it one of the most popular locomotives of its time. Railroads used it in everything from coal drags to intermodal service. Many SD40-2s remain in service today—some rebuilt, others still running in their original form—testament to the model’s legendary reliability.
