48' Thrall 2-Hood Coil Car

Prototype Information

The Thrall 48′ two-hood coil car emerged in the 1980s as a purpose-built solution for hauling coiled sheet steel. Thrall designed it with a 48-foot flat deck and two removable hoods, allowing cranes to quickly access and cover the cargo. The dual hoods protected the steel from weather while speeding up loading and unloading.

Each car featured lined troughs that cradled coils securely, preventing movement in transit. Major railroads like Conrail, CSX, and Norfolk Southern adopted the design to serve steel mills and auto plants. After Trinity Industries acquired Thrall in 2001, it continued producing coil cars based on this proven design. The 48′ two-hood car remains a workhorse for steel transport today.
