AC4400 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
General Electric (GE) launched the AC4400CW in 1994 to compete directly with EMD’s SD70MAC and push the industry toward AC traction technology. GE equipped the locomotive with 4,400 horsepower, C-C trucks, and a 7FDL-16 diesel engine, using AC traction motors to boost pulling power and reduce maintenance needs.
Railroads like Union Pacific, CSX, Canadian Pacific, and KCS quickly adopted the AC4400CW for heavy freight service, especially in coal and intermodal operations. GE built over 2,500 units, making it one of its most successful designs. Many AC4400CWs still run today, with several upgraded under rebuild programs like the AC44C6M conversion.
