42' Coil Car

Prototype Information

Thrall developed these 42-foot insulated coil cars to transport temperature-sensitive cold-rolled steel. The single insulated hood shields delicate steel coils from moisture and environmental damage during transit. Trinity Industries acquired Thrall in 2001 and maintained production of this specific design through 2012.

Distinct spotting features separate the two builders. Trinity-produced units feature independent handrails on the car body ends. They also moved the end railings away from the hood assembly itself. These versatile cars typically travel in small cuts or as single carloads across the North American rail network.
