5820 Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

Pullman-Standard produced the 5820-cubic-foot covered hopper between 1971 and 1982. This design gained popularity among private owners and the Pullman-Standard lease fleet. Cars built after July 1, 1974, typically remain in service for 50 years. Some units reach a 65-year lifespan if they meet specific increased service criteria.

The 5820 series underwent several component changes over time. Original builds featured Micro-Matic pneumatic outlets and Mon-o-Wheel or Tri-Wheel roof hatches. Maintenance cycles often introduced Salco-brand replacements. Modern vented hatches now allow for unloading without requiring personnel to climb the running boards.

These hoppers frequently gather near petrochemical hubs like the Texas Chemical Coast. They transport plastic pellets used for products ranging from milk jugs to fiberglass panels. Many cars serve as rolling warehouses at logistics yards. Customers often unload these staged cars directly into pneumatic trailers as needed.
