60' Trinity 7500 High Cube Box Car
Prototype Information
Trinity Industries launched the 60-foot, 7,500-cubic-foot boxcar in the late 1990s to meet rising demand for high-capacity freight equipment. The company built the car for shippers of paper, lumber, and other bulky but relatively light commodities. Trinity gave the car wide plug doors for fast loading, a cushioned underframe to protect fragile cargo, and a taller, longer body that delivered far more cubic space than earlier 50- or 60-foot designs while staying within clearance limits.
Railroads and leasing companies quickly added the 7,500-cubic-foot boxcars to their fleets as shippers pressed for more efficient equipment. The design marked Trinity’s push to capture traffic in the paper and forest products markets and highlighted the late-20th-century shift toward larger, specialized boxcars that cut costs and improved fleet productivity.
