F68BH Finger Rack Flat Car

Prototype Information

Bethlehem Steel Company introduced the F68BH flatcar class for Trailer Train at the end of 1969. These 100-ton cars measured 68 feet over the end sills. This specific variant featured steel decks and transverse deck risers. The design included a MacLean-Fogg transverse tie-down system and distinctive upright finger racks near each end. These racks secured concrete reinforcing bar, earning the cars the nickname “candelabra cars.”

The equipment utilized 36-inch wheels and hydraulic snubbers to stabilize the ride. Bethlehem Steel installed 15-inch end-of-car cushioning to protect the heavy steel loads from shifting during transit. The company built 150 units between December 1969 and February 1970. Most cars originally served the Bethlehem Steel facility in Steelton, Pennsylvania. From there, they transported rebar to construction sites throughout the country.
