Description

Railroad Short Name: PRR

In 1913, Ohio, and subsequently several other states, passed laws mandating larger and safer cabooses with steel underframes, leading to the introduction of the N6B (and nearly identical N6A) class cabin cars on the Pennsylvania. Due to overhead clearance restrictions in eastern tunnels, class N6B was fitted with a narrow cupola with tapered sides and a more pronounced roof arch than the N6A. While some N6Bs would be built new, the pressing need for cars lead the Pennsy to begin a major rebuilding program, utilizing bodies from older four-wheel cars. On most of these rebuilds, one end of the original body was simply extended to fit the new underframe, resulting in an off-center mounting point for the cupola, however some emerged from the shops with center-mounted cupolas as well. Over 1100 of both classes were completed by 1923, but many of the N6A cars were later rebuilt to N6B standards. Many saw 40 to 50 years of service across the system, but spent their last years on slower locals and some were then reassigned to work train duty. Through the years they wore a variety of lettering schemes and logos, and several found their way to shortlines operating near the Pennsy as well. A handful still survive today at various museums and displays.
