MP15AC Diesel Switcher

Prototype Information

The EMD MP15AC is a diesel-electric switcher built by General Motors’ Electro-Motive Division. It was produced from 1975 to 1984. The locomotive is a successor to the SW1500 and MP15DC. “MP” means “Multi-Purpose,” showing it could switch in yards or run on short mainline trips.

The MP15AC used an AC alternator with a rectifier. This powered DC traction motors. The setup was more reliable than older DC generators. It also had a longer frame and rode on Blomberg B trucks. These trucks were usually used on road locomotives, giving a smoother ride.

It had a 12-cylinder EMD 645E engine and produced 1,500 horsepower. Railroads like Southern Pacific, Long Island Rail Road, and Milwaukee Road used it widely.

The MP15AC was one of EMD’s last switchers. Many served for decades. Some were later sold to shortlines and industrial operators. It remains known for its power, durability, and flexibility.
