SD45-2 Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

The EMD SD45‑2 was built from 1972 to 1974 as an upgraded version of the SD45. It retained the 3,600‑horsepower 20‑cylinder 645E3 engine and added Dash‑2 electrical improvements for greater reliability.

Its six-axle design was ideal for heavy freight service. Major operators included the Santa Fe, Clinchfield, Seaboard Coast Line, and Erie Lackawanna. Unlike the SD45, the SD45‑2’s long hood is vertical, with no flares, and the rear cooling fans are more widely spaced.

Only 136 units were built, and most served in their original form. The SD45‑2 is remembered for combining high horsepower, Dash‑2 reliability, and classic six-axle EMD styling.
