Prototype Information
Norfolk Southern introduced the SD60E in 2010 as part of a major in-house rebuild program to extend the life and performance of its aging EMD SD60 fleet. Rebuilt at NS’s Juniata Locomotive Shop in Altoona, Pennsylvania, the SD60E combined proven EMD reliability with modern upgrades and distinctive styling.
Each unit received a rebuilt 16-cylinder 710G engine rated at 4,000 horsepower, updated electronics, new cabs with improved crash worthiness and crew comfort, and fresh paint. The locomotive’s unique angular “Crescent” cab design quickly set it apart from standard SD60s.
The program modernized over 130 locomotives, giving NS a cost-effective way to meet performance and safety goals without buying new power. The SD60E stands as a strong example of Norfolk Southern’s commitment to innovation and in-house engineering.
