Prototype Information

Norfolk Southern launched the EMD SD60E program in the 2010s to breathe new life into its aging SD60 fleet. Instead of replacing them, NS rebuilt these locomotives with a 4,000-horsepower EMD 16-710G3B engine, advanced electronics, and the distinctive Crescent Cab for improved visibility and crew safety.

Between 2010 and 2017, NS rolled out 135 units, putting them to work on both mainline and secondary duties. The SD60E proved that modernization could keep older locomotives competitive while saving costs.
