10,000 Gallon "Beer Can" Tank Car
Prototype Information
The GATX 10,000-gallon beer can tank car earned its nickname from its unusually short, stubby appearance. Introduced in the mid-1960s, these cars measure less than 30 feet long, making them look like a small cylinder on wheels. Despite their tiny size, they were not built for small shipments. Instead, GATX designed them to haul extremely dense and heavy liquids like tallow, molasses, and hazardous chemicals. The short wheelbase and rigid stub-sill design allowed the car to concentrate massive weight safely over the trucks without the need for a long, heavy underframe.
These cars became common sights in the 1970s and 1980s, often appearing at the end of freight trains to keep their concentrated weight away from lighter equipment. While many carried food products like corn syrup, others served the petrochemical industry by transporting heavy oil additives and solvents. Their specialized nature meant they often stayed in dedicated service for decades, outlasting many larger general-service cars. Though many have now retired from mainline duty, their unique beer can silhouette remains a favorite for railfans and modelers who appreciate their departure from standard tank car proportions.
