11,000 Gallon Tank Car

Prototype Information

The ACF 11,000-gallon tank car was built by American Car & Foundry, a major railcar manufacturer founded in 1899. It was used to transport liquids like petroleum, chemicals, and food products. These cars became common from the 1940s to the 1960s.

The tank was made of steel, either riveted or welded. Some versions had insulation or linings for special cargo. The dome on top allowed for safe loading and pressure control.

This size was ideal before larger tank cars became the norm. As safety rules changed, many were retired or upgraded in the 1980s and 1990s. Some are still in use or preserved in museums.
